Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Although your Windows 10 PC will continue to operate beyond this date, Microsoft will cease providing essential services such as security patches and technical assistance that keep your system secure and running smoothly.
Why Business Owners Must Act Now
- Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your devices become increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, malware, and hacking attempts. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported Windows version is essential.
- Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are designed to work with the latest operating systems. Post end-of-life, some of your critical software may malfunction or stop working entirely.
- Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or adhering to strict regulations risk fines or legal issues if they continue using outdated software. Staying current helps maintain compliance and avoid penalties.
What Are Your Upgrade Options?
Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 PCs meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, which can lead to upgrade errors.
If your current device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:
- Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
- Enroll in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program (details below)
- Transition to a Linux operating system
- Continue using Windows 10 despite risks (not recommended)
Before making any changes, always back up your important data to prevent loss during the transition.
Extended Security Updates for Windows 10
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU) for one year after the support end date. This temporary solution helps protect your system but is not a long-term fix.
To access ESU, you can either pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. There is also a free option that requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your data with OneDrive, which provides 5 GB of free cloud storage (additional storage may be needed for large files).
Act quickly: Registration for ESU must be completed before October 14 to qualify.
